Computer Associates Pledges $12 Million To North Shore-LIJ Health System

NEW HYDE PARK, NY - Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA) today announced a $12 million, 10-year pledge to the North Shore-Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health System to create the Computer Associates Pediatric Wellness Center at Schneider Children's Hospital (SCH), and to improve child and adolescent healthcare in the New York Metro Region.

CA's contribution also will help expand the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from 44 to 68 beds, build a new glass-enclosed atrium, and support a treatment center for families exposed to traumatic events such as abuse, neglect, domestic violence, devastating injuries, illness and disasters.

CA President and Chief Executive Officer John Swainson announced the pledge -- the largest ever presented by CA, and the first of the hospital's $100 million capital expansion campaign -- at a news conference with North Shore-LIJ Health System President and CEO Michael J. Dowling, and grateful patients and their parents.

The Computer Associates Pediatric Wellness Center at Schneider Children's Hospital will be a "center without walls" that will incorporate diverse programs, such as nutrition, child safety and parenting, and is designed to strengthen the well-being of children and young people. Through the Center, the hospital will expand its community health education programs to parents throughout Long Island, Queens and Staten Island, with a strong emphasis on disease prevention.

In addition, funds will be directed to:

  • Build a 5,900-square-foot addition to the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, resulting in 24 new beds for high-risk newborns.
  • Construct a new 6,000-square-foot, family friendly, multi-functional atrium at SCH. This four-story, glass-enclosed structure, to be located in an existing, outdoor courtyard adjacent to the hospital lobby, will become the "heart" of the hospital, and serve as a platform for myriad health and safety programs offered by the Computer Associates Pediatric Wellness Center.
  • Support The Center for Child and Family Traumatic Stress. The Center is dedicated to children, adolescents and families who have experienced traumatic events or are at risk for exposure to such events, including abuse, neglect, domestic violence, injuries, devastating illness and disasters. The gift is earmarked for the on-going development and implementation of effective intervention programs, professional training, public education and research.

"The relationship between the North Shore-LIJ Health System and CA demonstrates our commitment to improving the quality of life in the local communities where our employees live and work," said Swainson. "This donation is very important to us because it helps ensure children, adolescents and families in CA's hometown region will continue to benefit from the world-class healthcare provided by North Shore-LIJ. It also helps provide increased access to these fine facilities and strengthen preventative and educational programs. We are very proud to partner with the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System."

"While Schneider Children's Hospital is recognized as one of the nation's elite pediatric institutions, the demands of caring for thousands of children every year -- from the New York metropolitan area and around the globe -- are straining our existing facility. Computer Associates' generosity will enable us to kick-start a five-year fundraising campaign that will change the face of children's healthcare and wellness in the New York area," said Dowling.

The $100 million capital expansion campaign, which CA's gift will help launch, will eventually support construction of a new inpatient wing, a pediatric emergency center, a pediatric ICU and an ambulatory hematology-oncology unit at the hospital, which was ranked earlier this year by Child magazine as one of the nation's top twenty children's hospitals.

"CA's donation will enable us to carry on the hospital's long-standing mission of promoting preventive healthcare while also providing the best clinical care to sick children," said Philip Lanzkowsky, MD, the hospital's executive director.
