Computer Associates Announces New Pro Bono Program To Donate Legal Services To Those In Need

ISLANDIA, N.Y., December 3, 2004 - Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA) today announced the establishment of its Worldwide Law Department Pro Bono Program to provide legal services to non-profit organizations and low-income community members, most of whom are on Long Island, who cannot afford to pay for legal services.

"CA has long sought to help those in need in the communities where we live and work," said Kenneth V. Handal, executive vice president and general counsel, CA. "By establishing a Pro Bono Program, we are enabling the members of our in-house Law Department to make important contributions to the community by using their valuable and needed skills."

CA's U.S. in-house legal team consists of more than 50 attorneys, paralegals and administrative personnel. Team members will partner with the Suffolk Legal Aid Society and Nassau/Suffolk Law Services Committee, Inc. to provide legal support on a wide range of issues, including child abuse and neglect, adoption, juvenile delinquency, drug abuse, social security and disability benefits, wills and bankruptcies. CA also expects to be working closely with the Long Island law firm of Farrell Fritz, P.C. to assist with the formation of New York not-for-profit organizations that are themselves pro bono service providers.

Recent studies by the American Bar Association (ABA) and others have found that 80% or more of low-income individuals and families with legal problems are unable to retain legal counsel because they lack the funds necessary to hire legal representation. Non-profit groups are also forced to forego critically important legal help due to their limited financial resources. In response to this need, the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct call for all attorneys to perform pro bono legal service. CA is among the growing number of in-house corporate legal departments that have joined in providing pro bono legal services, which historically has been more prevalent in law firms.

"CA's program for pro bono legal assistance comes at a critical time," said Jayne Ann McPartlin, Chief Attorney, Legal Aid Society. "With the growing abundance of open and complex cases as well as limited resources, it's clear that additional legal resources would be extremely valuable. We look forward to working with the legal team from CA and hope that more corporations will follow their lead."
