Exxon Mobil Corporation is helping to prepare more than 2,000 Detroit area students for the start of the new school year through its support of Teach the Children. The Teach the Children program provides elementary school students in communities across the country with book bags filled with school supplies.
"With the coming of the new school year, we are proud to offer the Teach the Children program in Detroit," said Michael D. Gore, ExxonMobil Midwest Retail Business Unit Manager. "Part of our emphasis has been to reach out to communities at the grassroots level. We believe in this education program because it benefits both Detroit area students and their families.
Local Mobil dealers have worked with local elementary schools to present the Teach the Children program in the Detroit area. Students in St. Scholastica School, Eisenhower Elementary School, Thomas Houghten Elementary School and Thomas Burt Elementary School will receive Mobil book bags containing essential supplies including pencils, pocket folders, and spiral notebooks needed for in-class and at-home study.
Thomas Burt Elementary School, located at 20710 Pilgrim Street, will host the Teach the Children kick-off pep rally on Thursday, August 31 beginning at 9:00 a.m. School officials, local dignitaries, parents and students will join Mobil staff for a brief program and the distribution of book bags and supplies.
Nick Monreal, Jr. established the Teach the Children program in 1976 in San Antonio, Texas. Following Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Monreal teamed up with the Kiwanis Club of the Little Havana area in Miami to help children whose schools and school supplies were destroyed by the catastrophic hurricane.
ExxonMobil has been involved in the Teach the Children program since 1995, supplying more than 100,000 students with new book bags and school supplies to begin the school year. Following its recent merger, ExxonMobil renewed its commitment to TTC and expanded the program into cities where Exxon stations operate.
The 2000 Teach the Children initiative will also be introduced at multiple elementary schools in New York, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, and San Diego.
