The City of Dallas and ExxonMobil Foundation will kick off the start of the 2000 ExxonMobil Green Team Program with a groundbreaking and opening ceremony on Tuesday, June 13 at St. Philip's Triangle Neighborhood in south Dallas. ExxonMobil Green Team, now in its 19th year, is a summer program for Dallas youth to work in landscape and maintenance of parks and athletic fields throughout the city, the construction of affordable houses, and participate in summer school classes.

"ExxonMobil is pleased to continue this signature community service program that prepares Dallas' youth for the future," said Kenneth P. Cohen, ExxonMobil's vice president for public affairs. "Participants in the program have an opportunity to enhance their education, increase their job training and gain practical work experience that will increase their opportunities upon graduation. Working with the City of Dallas and the program's community and educational partners, we believe the Green Team program delivers positive results for the community and the students."

Seventy-five high school students will participate in the program this year. Of these, 16 will help build two affordable homes in the St. Philip's Triangle Neighborhood under the training and supervision of the Construction Technology Department of North Lake College. Fifty-nine students will help landscape and maintain 32 Dallas parks and athletic fields.

Students in the Green Team Program combine work assignments and academic courses at the ExxonMobil Academy at El Centro College. Basic academic courses as well as computer, life skills and computer literacy classes are administered through El Centro College.

"We are very excited that ExxonMobil Foundation is continuing to support this important city summer youth program," said Douglas A. Dykman, interim director for the City of Dallas Housing Department. "Through this program, we have been able to provide Dallas' youth with a meaningful and positive work experience paired with basic classes in math, reading and writing. We hope the program reinforces the students' awareness of the critical relationship between education and work."

Managed by the City of Dallas Housing Department, the ExxonMobil Green Team Program involves several partners, including: the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department; Dallas County Community College District; El Centro College and North Lake College; the Dallas Independent School District, and St. Philip's Neighborhood Development Corporation.

Since 1981, ExxonMobil Foundation has invested more than $4.3 million in the Dallas Green Team Program in which more than 2,500 Dallas students have participated. The Dallas program has become the model for ExxonMobil Green Team programs in several cities around the country where ExxonMobil has operations, including Beaumont, Texas; Torrance, Calif.; Paulsboro, N.J.; Chalmette, La.; Arlington, Va. and Joliet, Ill.

The Green Team program is one of ExxonMobil's signature community contributions programs. Last year, ExxonMobil supported more than 200 nonprofit organizations in the Dallas area.
