Interactive tool assesses personal sustainability practices; identifies areas for consumer change

Nov. 19 /CSRwire/ - MILWAUKEE, WI. - November 19, 2008 - Johnson Controls, the global multi-industrial leader in energy efficiency and sustainability, has teamed up with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to launch greenprint (www.mygreenprint.org).

Greenprint is an interactive online tool that helps individuals understand and improve their ecological footprint, educates participants about the benefits of sustainable living and allows them to score their current level of personal sustainability. It also challenges individuals to commit to taking three actions that would have a significant environmental impact with modest additional effort.

The greenprint tool sets itself apart by helping individuals identify and prioritize practical options for improving sustainability at home, work and in their vehicles. Upon completion, greenprint provides a score that reflects current behaviors – and another score that reflects the benefit of intended changes. Users can compare their results with other users.

"The ultimate goal of greenprint is to accelerate the move to more sustainable living, in a fun and personally relevant way," according to Clay Nesler, vice president of global energy and sustainability at Johnson Controls. "The data collected will also give us a better understanding of the dynamics of making personal sustainability decisions. We expect the findings to highlight key areas of focus for ongoing environmental awareness and personal action."

"Carbon calculators are simply no longer enough," according to Rick Duke, director of NRDC's Center for Market Innovation. "To achieve results that reduce energy use and electric bills, we need tools, such as greenprint, that can help homeowners turn their carbon footprint results into smart choices and new solutions."

Greenprint challenges individuals to commit to new energy-efficient or sustainable behaviors immediately. The data collected will be tracked to observe trends over time and to better understand how to accelerate change. Johnson Controls anticipates working with other nonprofit organizations in the promotion of greenprint to support a variety of consumer and corporate sustainability initiatives.
