BUFFALO - KeyBank is the 2005 recipient of the Niagara University College of Business Corporate Leadership Award in recognition of Key's organizational excellence, community commitment, state-of-the-art business practices and outstanding reputation.

Marsha Henderson, president of KeyBank's Western New York District, accepted the award last night before a crowd of 500 at the College of Business's 15th annual Business Appreciation Awards Dinner at the Adam's Mark Hotel. Under the theme, "Honoring Women in Business," the dinner celebrated the College's 75th anniversary and featured Henderson as the keynote speaker and one of four "Woman in Business" honorees.

When presenting the award, Jack Helmuth, Ph.D., dean of the College of Business Administration, recognized Key for its outstanding leadership, technological superiority in online banking, and for creating a corporate culture that fosters community service among its 1,000 employees in Western New York.

In her keynote address, Henderson paid tribute to the College of Business and its status as an early leader in educating women by noting the accomplishment of May I. Lanigan of Niagara Falls as the first-ever female graduate of the College of Business and Niagara University in 1936, eight years prior to the university becoming coeducational on a large scale.

"The Niagara College of Business is a pioneer catalyst for economic and workforce inclusion," said Henderson. "Today more than ever, Niagara women graduates and the businesses they lead benefit from the university's mission to develop the whole of a person for the good of one's personal and professional life. We deeply respect that at Key."

Women account for 50 percent of Niagara University College of Business graduates today, which Henderson noted in further citing that women-owned businesses today are growing at around twice the rate of all businesses.

"Our world is far better served by these women who have enlarged the pool of talent, adding to the richness of thought and dialogue; providing a viewpoint and perspective not previously heard or included," said Henderson.

In that context, Henderson noted KeyBank's ranking of 13th on DiversityInc Magazine's recently published list of Top 50 Companies for Diversity. While citing prestige associated with list, she emphasized that Key knows that, "just as with any other organization or community," there's much work yet to be done.

Henderson, who also chairs of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership, closed the evening by acknowledging the important ongoing role the business community plays in supporting and shaping institutions like Niagara and their commitment to educational and business excellence. It's something, she said, that Key takes very seriously.
