The 3M Foundation Board of Directors approved over $7.5 million for educational institutions and programs throughout the country and over $1.7 million to support arts organizations and initiatives which enhance the quality of life in 3M communities.

Education projects selected for funding include:

Higher Education

Over $1 million was designated for scholarships and other programs designed to encourage the participation of minorities and women in science, engineering and business.
$522,000 to Texas A&M University for the development of a Multidisciplinary Engineering curriculum
$150,000 to Calhoun Community College in Decatur, Ala. for the development of an Advanced Manufacturing Center
$40,000 to the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn. for the Sales Innovation Center for Women

K-12 Education

$82, 500 to 3M TWIST (Teachers Working in Science and Technology)
$75,000 to MATHCOUNTS
$60,000 to 3M STEP (Science Training Encouragement Program)
The board approved a new partnership with the American Association of School Librarians, a division of the American Library Association. 3M agreed to donate its Library Detection Systems to almost 100 school libraries across the country. This $1,000,000 initiative will help middle and high school libraries preserve their collections of books, CD-ROMs and other materials critical to students' learning.

In addition, the board approved a $160,000 grant to Metropolitan State University for the Urban Teacher Education Program. This initiative, a collaborative effort with Inver Hills Community College and Minneapolis Technical College, is designed to enhance the quality of education in urban schools by attracting more students to teaching careers and preparing teachers to teach in urban settings.

In addition to these education grants, 3M also approved a $1.7 million contribution to arts organizations including:

$500,000 to the Minnesota Children's Museum for the redesign of the World Works Gallery.
$125,000 to the Science Museum of Minnesota
$100,000 to the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts
$250,000 to The Nature Conservancy for the 50th Anniversary Traveling Photography Exhibit
$40,000 to Portage for Youth for the renovation of the Mounds Theatre.
"The mission of 3M's contributions program is supporting and inspiring innovation that strengthens education and enhances the quality of life in our communities," said David Powell, president, 3M Foundation. "We're happy to support these initiatives which stimulate creativity and provide educational opportunities for students across the country."

The 3M Foundation was formed in 1953 as the charitable arm of 3M. The contributions program includes cash and in-kind contributions approved by 3M and the 3M Foundation. This is bolstered by employee and retiree volunteerism. The program stresses 3M's traditional commitment to corporate responsibility while investing in programs that support community needs in education, social and economic development. In 1999, the 3M Foundation and Corporate Contributions Program donated almost $30 million in cash, products and services to educational and charitable institutions.
