Nicor's chairman, president and CEO Tom Fisher announced today that the Nicor Corporate Challenge has raised a grand total of $22,080 for the United Way. The money is being donated by Nicor and Arthur Andersen L.L.C. who have designated $10 per Bears tackle and $100 per Bears sack throughout the season. The corporate challenge donation will be included with other contributions made to the 1999 United Way campaign for metropolitan Chicago.

"We're happy with the success of the Nicor Corporate Challenge and especially happy with the improved performance of the Chicago Bears this season. But the biggest winner here is the United Way," said Fisher, who is also the general chairman of the 1999 United Way campaign. "We'd like to thank the Bears for their support of our Challenge. As a Chicago Bears sponsor, we have enjoyed a good relationship with the organization and recognize the support the NFL has provided the United Way for years."

This season, the Bears had 744 tackles and 36 sacks.

"In many ways this has been an exciting season," said the Bears' John Bostrom, director of community relations. "Our players are committed to bringing a winning football team to the people of Chicago. Outstanding performance contributes to success on the field, and the Nicor Corporate Challenge made each tackle and sack count off the field as well."

The United Way campaign supports about 430 agencies in Chicago and more than 160 suburbs. In 1998, these agencies served more than 2.5 million people.

"Our current fundraising campaign is drawing to a close, and we're optimistic about reaching our goal of $100 million. It's United Way's partnership with companies like Nicor and organizations like the NFL and the Bears that allow us to support services that are vital to our communities," said Bill Ketchum, president and CEO of the United Way Crusade of Mercy.

United Way supports services that touch a wide range of people including hospice care for seriously ill patients and their families, assistance that allows seniors to maintain their independence, day care, and youth and recreational programs. The United Way Community Fund also supports areas of critical need like fighting homelessness, domestic abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, and gangs.
