PORTLAND, Ore. - NIKE, Inc. today announced its first NikeGO Factory Store grants, a way to recognize and reward local non-profit organizations dedicated to helping kids get active through sports and recreational activities. In its first year, the program will award 10, $5,000 grants ($2,000 in cash and $3,000 in product) to organizations in 10 local factory store communities and plans to expand the number of grants and markets in the future.

"NikeGO is Nike's long-term commitment to getting kids more physically active to help improve their lives, and reconnect with the joy and fun of physical activity," said Ed Stair, Nike's GM of Factory Stores in the United States. "We hope the NikeGO Factory Store Grant Program will help bring NikeGO to the company's more than 70 factory stores located across the country."

Each year, the NikeGO Factory Store Grant Program will seek to award organizations committed to helping get kids active through sports or recreational physical activities. Qualifying non-profit organizations and their programs must meet the following criteria to be eligible for a grant: involve 8-15 year olds; increase youth physical activity; measure impact; and be fun, sustained programs created or requested by kids.

Applications for the 2004 program were made available at Nike Factory Stores in select markets March 1 through April 23. The following organizations were awarded grants:

1. Boys & Girls Club of Imperial Beach - Imperial Beach, CA
2. Snap-Hold-Kick Clinics - Fontana, CA
3. Boys and Girls Club of Jackson County - Commerce, GA
4. After School All Stars - Orlando, Fl
5. Howell Highlander Basketball Camp - Howell, MI
6. East End Titans Baseball - Riverhead, NY
7. Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster - Lancaster, PA
8. Charles Davis Foundation - Nashville, TN
9. San Marcos Parks & Recreation Department, San Marcos, TX
10. Friends of Youth - Redmond, WA

"No matter the causes -- school funding cuts, lack of phys-ed programs, shortage of facilities, computers and the Internet, or plain old apathy -- the unvarnished truth is that kids today are not involved in enough physical activity to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle," said Molly White, Director of Nike U.S. Community Affairs. "We want to support community-based solutions that help kids have fun and get moving."
