· PowerChoice Clean Electricity from natural gas will achieve double-digit emissions reductions
· PowerChoice Green Electricity from renewable sources will reduce emissions even further

Oct. 26 /CSRwire/ - Pepco Energy Services, Inc. today became the first competitive electricity supplier in Maryland offering “clean” electricity with emissions significantly below the regional average.

The “clean” electricity now available for consumers to purchase under the company’s PowerChoice® brand will be generated exclusively by natural gas, which is a cleaner burning fuel than current fuel sources within the region. PowerChoice Clean electricity grows the portfolio of energy supply and energy services the company is marketing as Maryland and other states permit residents and businesses to choose their electricity supplier.

“Electricity from natural gas enables consumers to exercise their preferences – and promote environmental protection – with the power of choice,” said Ed Mayberry, president of Pepco Energy Services.

Because coal is the predominant fuel used to generate electricity throughout the mid-Atlantic region, the exclusive use of natural gas reduces the three most closely watched emissions by double-digits per megawatt hour of electricity generated. Emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) decline by 97 percent; sulfur dioxide (SO2) by 85 percent and carbon dioxide (CO2) by 23 percent compared to the fuels traditionally used in the region. (Please see chart at end of this release.)
Market research by Pepco Energy Services has suggested that consumers are interested in obtaining electricity produced by generation that is more environmentally friendly.

In addition, the company soon plans to offer PowerChoice Green Electricity that will reduce emissions even further by drawing at least 50 percent from renewable sources such as wind, solar and geothermal energy.

“We created these products with specific consumer profiles in mind. All of these options are, or soon will be, available under our PowerChoice brand at our www.PowerChoice.com web site,” said Joseph A. Marsilii, Jr., president of the Home and Business Division of Pepco Energy Services.

Other products and services being marketing under the PowerChoice brand includes basic electricity natural gas, back-up generators, energy-saving windows, air cleaners, vinyl siding, surge protectors and lighting products.

Pepco Energy Services, Inc. is a separately operated, unregulated energy services subsidiary of Potomac Electric Power Company (NYSE: POM), an electric distribution company serving Washington, D.C. and the close-in Maryland suburbs.

Pepco Energy Services, Inc. is not the same company as Potomac Electric Power Company and prices and services of Pepco Energy Services, Inc. are not set by the Public Service Commission.
