Safeway Wins 2004 Philanthropy Award From Maryland Chamber and BBJ

LANHAM, MD - Safeway Inc. was the winner of the 2004 Maryland Business Philanthropy Award, presented jointly by the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and the Baltimore Business Journal, during the annual Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) - Maryland Chapter Philanthropy Day at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore recently.

The company, earning the honor in the Large Employee (501+ employees) category, was recognized for its long history of service and support to a numerous charitable causes and non-profit agencies that include prostate and breast cancer awareness and research, Easter Seals, the Capital Area and Maryland Food Banks, and local schools through the Safeway Club Card for Education program. During 2003, Safeway's Eastern Division contributed more than $10 million throughout the mid-Atlantic region with the company donating more than $80 million nationwide.

"It is a tremendous honor to receive this award on behalf of Safeway and the 16,000 employees in the Eastern Division," said Hank Cominiello, acting President of Safeway's Eastern Division. "We take a great deal of pride in our charitable work and it is our pleasure to work for a company that believes strongly in giving back to its community."
