Solectron Corporation (NYSE: SLR), the world's premier supply-chain facilitator for customized electronics technology, manufacturing and service solutions, announced that The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) today granted Solectron chairman, president and CEO, Ko Nishimura, Ph.D., its Community Service Award in recognition of his distinctive and honorable leadership.

A committee of peers selected Nishimura as an exemplary corporate and community leader who has enhanced life in Silicon Valley by conducting himself and his business with honor, integrity and distinction. Nishimura joins an elite group of corporate leaders who have received the award annually over the past 35 years.

"I am honored to receive this award," said Nishimura. "I believe that integrity should be at the heart of any enterprise, whether it is a company or a personal undertaking. I would like to accept this on behalf of my family and all the 47,000 associates of Solectron who embody the principles that this award stands for."

Nishimura joined Solectron in 1988 as chief operating officer and in 1990 he became president. In 1992, he was appointed chief executive officer. He was elected chairman of the board in 1996. During his tenure, Nishimura has helped to grow Solectron into the world's largest EMS company.

Under Nishimura's leadership, Solectron won the prestigious Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award twice - in 1997 and 1991 - after infusing the rigorous certification criteria into the company's corporate culture and strategy.

In addition, Nishimura is known within the Japanese-American community for his support of the Japanese Western U.S. Association and the Yu-Ai Kai Senior Community Center in San Jose.

"Dr. Nishimura, more than any other leader this year, has helped increase the respect for differences in the community," said Lil Silberstein of the NCCJ. "His leadership is an example to all who enter the workforce and become the leaders and producers of our future." Former award winners include Eric Benhamou of 3M Corp., Lewis E. Platt of Hewlett-Packard and Ed McCracken of Silicon Graphics.

The award ceremony will be held June 3, 2000, at the San Jose Fairmont Hotel. Ken Levy of KLA-Tencor Corp. will also receive an award. The dinner chairmen include Winston Chen, Ph.D., Solectron board of director and Ned Barnholt of Agilent Technologies.
