More than 3,500 UPS employees will roll up their sleeves to help build houses in the Philippines, read to hospitalized children in Argentina and Nigeria, and work in food banks in Belgium, among many other activities. UPS employees in 35 countries, from the China to the Czech Republic, will volunteer more than 13,000 hours in community service this week. This is triple the number of volunteer hours employees gave during the inaugural Global Volunteer Week last year.
"As a company that works directly in communities all around the world, we have a responsibility to give back through community service," said David Abney, President of UPS International. "This volunteer week is an important opportunity for employees to help those who need it most."
UPS started Global Volunteer Week in 2003 to extend the company's legacy of volunteerism. In the United States, more than 30,000 employees are involved in the company's Neighbor to Neighbor program, which provides volunteer opportunities through UPS's charitable arm, The UPS Foundation.
"We are in the community every day," said Abney. "We're in every town and every village. We drive down every street. We knock on the doors and see the hungry, the homeless, the undereducated. Our community is developing our future leaders. It's up to us to help make a better future."
Global Volunteer Week projects were chosen by UPS employees in each participating country. The following are just a few examples of the volunteer tasks:
