In Atlanta, scheduled activities for UPS employees include a day of community service on July 22, participation in a book and school supplies drive culminating in a special delivery on Aug. 10, plus other volunteer opportunities with non-profit agencies. Later this summer, The UPS Foundation will launch a competition among UPS's U.S. operational facilities to increase volunteer activities. Competition winners will receive grants for the nonprofit organization of their choice. In addition, UPS employees around the world will participate in the company's first-ever Global Volunteer Week celebration from Oct. 19-26.
The U.S. activities are part of UPS's participation in Business Strengthening America (BSA) and a localized effort, BSA-Atlanta. BSA is the business community's nationwide effort to increase volunteerism in response to President Bush's Call to Service. UPS was one of 18 companies that committed to President Bush to lead a national drive to increase volunteerism in corporate America.
"Very few companies have the unique opportunity to establish the presence that UPS has in every community," said UPS Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew. "At UPS, we see the needs in the community each day, and we value volunteering and getting dirt under our nails while helping to address community issues just as much as we value donating funds."
Neighbor-to-Neighbor Day of Service
On July 22, UPS will have a day of community service through Neighbor-to-Neighbor, the company's employee volunteerism program. The day's activities will focus on education and literacy. More than 200 UPS employees will volunteer at various Boys & Girls Clubs of Atlanta and Sheltering Arms facilities to assist with reading and other classroom activities.
"Education and the development of future leaders have long been key components of our community outreach," said Evern Cooper, president of The UPS Foundation and vice president of the company's corporate relations initiatives. "Collaborating with our nonprofit partners allows us to make the greatest impact on our communities."
Making a Case for Reading and the Back 2 School Drive
Other UPS volunteer activities planned for this summer include sponsoring and providing volunteers for the Children's Museum of Atlanta's third annual Making a Case for Reading month-long event in August. UPS and its employees also will participate in the Children's Restoration Network's ninth annual Back 2 School book and school supply drive, which will include an August 10 "delivery" of the donated goods to 1,300 homeless children by a UPS driver.
Global Volunteer Week
October 19-26, 2003 will mark UPS's first-ever global volunteer effort. During that week, UPS employees will engage in local community activities in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, United Kingdom, the U.S. and other locations around the world. In fact, UPS Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew will join other senior UPS officials in China, where they are scheduled to assist in building a new school.
