UPS Again Among Nation's Best for Women-Owned Businesses

For the second consecutive year, UPS has been named among America’s Top 16 Corporations for Women Business Enterprises (WBEs) by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), the nation’s premiere third-party certification entity for businesses owned and operated by women.

The national honor recognizes the efforts of the company and its Supplier Diversity Program, which was created to increase economic opportunities provided to women- and minority-owned businesses. In addition to developing direct partnerships with non-majority businesses, UPS encourages its majority suppliers to support women- and minority-owned firms. UPS has nearly 2,000 women-owned vendors and the company spent more than $49 million with WBEs in 1999.

“The products and services we secure through the Supplier Diversity Program are crucial to UPS’s business,” said UPS Corporate Supplier Diversity Coordinator Glen Mayer. “Our partners in the program are truly the reason for the success we’ve had. We are honored to be recognized again for our efforts and will continue to work to provide business opportunities to women- and minority-owned firms.”

The complete list of America’s Top Corporations for WBEs was announced today at a press conference in New Orleans.

For its second annual listing, WBENC surveyed Fortune 1000 U.S. companies on issues including senior management involvement, identification and development of WBEs, internal buyer education, program structure, development of mentor-protégé initiatives, resources and measurement, as well as internal and external communications to determine companies with best practices. To compile its list of top corporations for women-owned businesses, WBENC formed a committee consisting of corporate representatives, women business leaders and women business advocates to evaluate survey results.

United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS:NYSE), the world’s largest express carrier and package delivery company, was recently awarded the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council’s 2000 Crystal Award for its supplier diversity efforts. UPS reported 1999 annual revenues of $27.1 billion. It resides on the Web at www.ups.com.
