UTC announced the initiative at the EPA Climate Leaders Partners meeting held in Farmington, Conn. The two-day conference drew corporate and governmental officials to address such environmental concerns as greenhouse gas emissions and water quality. UTC began planning the Sustainable Cities initiative a year ago.
Under the new corporate philanthropy program, UTC has awarded $350,000 in first-year grants to national and Connecticut programs and plans to increase that to $500,000 next year.
"UTC companies have given rise to the modern city with elevators made by Otis and air-conditioners made by Carrier. We believe successful companies improve the human condition, and the new Sustainable Cities program builds on that commitment," said Krista Pilot, UTC's director of community affairs.

In addition to the national programs, UTC is awarding $110,000 in grants to organizations in Connecticut, UTC's home state.
