SUTTON, WV - Weyerhaeuser Company's Sutton oriented strand board facility has earned international recognition for its rigorous approach to environmental management. The facility is registered to the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) Standard.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) was founded to develop a common set of manufacturing, trade and communications standards. ISO 14001 is a standard for effectively managing the environmental aspects of an organization's activities, products and services. Meeting the standard demonstrates that Weyerhaeuser's Sutton mill documents and manages its operations to minimize the impact on the environment.

In order to achieve ISO 14001 certification, Sutton developed and implemented a formal, documented environmental management system. That system addresses federal, state and local environmental regulatory compliance, as well as initiatives in areas such as waste reduction and pollution prevention.

ISO's proven contributions to companies seeking to achieve excellence in all aspects of operations dovetail with Weyerhaeuser's environmental goals, according to Sutton General Manager Kerry Miller.

"We are very pleased to receive this important industry certification," Miller said. "It is extremely significant for two reasons: It meets the environmental standards that our customers demand; and it represents another example of our longstanding commitment to minimizing our impact on the environment, enhancing worker safety and improving business performance."

This certification is an example of the commitment of Sutton mill to operate in accordance with the highest environmental standards. The mill's Environmental Team, headed by Engineering/Environmental Manager Kimble Garrett, worked diligently over the past year to prepare for the rigorous certification audit. Contractors working at the mill are also made aware of the process, Miller said.

"The professionalism of our employees is the key to the implementation of these management systems and our continued success," Miller said.

The Sutton mill is the 18th Weyerhaeuser manufacturing facility to earn ISO 14001 registration. In addition, more than 80 percent of Weyerhaeuser's forest lands are ISO 14001 registered. Weyerhaeuser's goal is for all of its manufacturing facilities and timberlands to be capable of meeting the ISO 14001 standard by 2005.

The Sutton mill employs approximately 180 people and produces oriented strand board (OSB.) OSB is a construction panel made with layers of precision-manufactured wood "strands" that are aligned, formed into panels and pressed with an exterior grade adhesive resin. The resulting engineered product is a high-quality, cost-effective panel for structural sheathing, subflooring, underlayments, webstock for I-beam floor joists, furniture stock and other building components.

Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE:WY), one of the world's largest integrated forest products companies, was incorporated in 1900. In 2001, sales were $14.5 billion. It has offices or operations in 18 countries, with customers worldwide. Weyerhaeuser is principally engaged in the growing and harvesting of timber; the manufacture, distribution and sale of forest products; and real estate construction, development and related activities.
