Weyerhaeuser Company today announced that it has won the Helping People in Need Award presented by the Association of Washington Business (AWB). The company received the community service honor for its personal, monetary and in-kind assistance to employees’ families affected by the Hurricane Floyd disaster.

After a personal visit to the hurricane-ravaged area by Steve Rogel, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Weyerhaeuser was quick to lend a helping hand to the employees of its 16 facilities in North Carolina. The company helped them deal with relief agencies and organized an adopt-a-family program so employees around the country could assist those affected by the flood. Employees’ personal financial contributions combined with a company match totaled over a quarter million dollars to assist those in need.

Accepting the award on the company’s behalf at an AWB event May 17 in Spokane, Wash., were Pamela Baade, education and volunteer programs manager, and Katy Taylor, North Carolina disaster relief coordinator.
