Avant! Foundation Creates $1 Million College Scholarship Fund for Bay Area Students with Great Academic Potential

Avant! Foundation Chairman Gerry Hsu will announce in San Jose tomorrow the creation of a $1 million gift to fund innovative college scholarships for economically disadvantaged Bay Area high school students who have demonstrated great academic promise but have not achieved outstanding grades due to extreme challenges outside of school. Such scholarships are the first known of this kind, and are meant to help students typically ineligible for high levels of financial assistance.

The Foundation will work with school districts in the Bay Area to identify 30 high school juniors, from which 10 winners will be selected for full academic scholarships to public or private colleges of their choice. The 20 runners-up will receive smaller scholarships.

Gerry Hsu, who created the gift as part of a $4 million contribution from Fremont-based Avant! Corporation [NASDAQ: AVNT], said, "It is deeply gratifying to create this
special scholarship fund. Ten intelligent, deserving young people who have faced difficult circumstances outside school will now attend college. Without such assistance, most would not have an opportunity at higher education. The spirit and effect of this program should help lift our whole community."

On Wednesday, September 13, Mr. Hsu will announce this program before students, parents, educators, civic leaders, and elected officials at Lincoln High School, at 555 Dana Avenue in San Jose, at 1:30 p.m. Media and residents of the community are welcome.
