Verizon Challenges Mets, Yankees: Score More Runs, Help More Kids

After school programs across the city will benefit from every run scored in the World Series, thanks to Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications.

The foundation will contribute $2,000 for each run scored by the Mets and the Yankees to The After-School Corporation., a non-profit agency that works with public schools and other youth-serving non-profit organizations to provide worthwhile after-school activities for youth in the five boroughs.

The Open Society Institute, a private grant-making foundation that established The After-School Corporation two years ago, will match the foundation's contribution.

"I hope they score a lot of runs," said Paul A. Crotty, Verizon group president for New York and Connecticut. "The best way to celebrate the city's great sports heritage and these players' performances is by going to bat for kids and enriching their lives. This money will support literacy, computer skills, extended learning and other fundamental activities during after-school hours."

On the off chance the series becomes a slugfest, Verizon Foundation has capped its total contribution at $100,000.

Verizon Foundation supports programs that create innovative e-solutions, help bridge the digital divide, foster basic and computer literacy, help enrich communities, and create a skilled workforce. Verizon Foundation promotes partnerships in technology with organizations serving the needs of diverse communities, people with disabilities, and the economically and socially disadvantaged.
