RadioShack Corporation (NYSE: RSH) announced today that its stores collected 133,000 wireless phones in three months as a national collection site for the Wireless Foundation’s Donate a Phone program. To date, this is the single largest contribution of handsets to the program since its inception in 1999.

RadioShack collected phones from May through July at its 7,100 stores across the country. The Donate a Phone program provides wireless phones to aid victims of domestic violence.

"When we set our goal for collecting phones in 2001, we knew we could surpass last year’s efforts, but we never thought we would more than double those numbers," said Laura Moore, senior vice president of public relations and corporate communications for RadioShack Corporation. "We are thrilled to be able to put 133,000 wireless phones into the hands of people in need. By helping to provide a much-needed lifeline to victims of domestic violence across America, we are able to help the communities and citizens we serve."

Sponsored by the Wireless Foundation, Motorola and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the Donate a Phone campaign was launched in September 1999 to collect and refurbish a portion of an estimated 24 million wireless phones that are no longer being used. During the last two years, corporations, businesses, civic groups and grassroots organizations have donated almost 300,000 phones to the program, and more than half of those phones have been collected by RadioShack.

"RadioShack did an outstanding job of making it convenient for Americans to donate their wireless phones to this program during its 2001 collection," said David Diggs, executive director of the Wireless Foundation. "By having stores in every neighborhood in the country, RadioShack was able to collect more phones for the program than any other drive to date. The Donate a Phone program is much further along in its mission of helping domestic violence victims thanks to the tremendous support of corporate partners such as RadioShack."

"Our store associates should get the lion’s share of credit for the unbelievable number of phones we were able to collect in such a short period of time," said Stewart Asimus, senior division vice president and general manager of RadioShack’s Connecting People strategic business unit. "They saw the Donate a Phone program as a great opportunity to talk to their customers about this worthwhile program and provide them with an easy way to get their phones into the hands of domestic violence victims."

The Donate a Phone program provides domestic violence shelters, law enforcement agencies and other organizations working to fight domestic violence with refurbished wireless phones. The phones are preprogrammed with 911 and other emergency numbers so that domestic violence victims can access local emergency services and domestic violence hotline numbers at the touch of a button. Local shelters, agencies and organizations that are interested in receiving preprogrammed phones can fill out an application online at www.donateaphone.com in the "Help for Victims" section.
