With distribution of the new 2001 TELUS Edmonton directory underway, TELUS Advertising Services (TAS) launches its annual directory recycling program.

TAS makes a cash donation to the Alberta Childrens Hospital Foundation and the Childrens Health Foundation of Northern Alberta based on the tonnage of directories collected during annual recycling drives across the province. Last year, TAS donated $29,300 to the Alberta Children's Hospital and $25,560 to the Children's Health Foundation of Northern Alberta. TELUS has been actively involved in recycling directories since 1990.

The childrens hospitals of Alberta are a natural beneficiary for the recycling program. Children are our future and helping to keep both them and our environment healthy is in everyones best interest, said Corinna Johnson, TAS distribution and recycling consultant. Something as simple as recycling your old directories can really benefit the children who depend on the specialized care that the two hospitals provide.

All TELUS directories contain a minimum of 25 per cent recycled paper and are entirely recyclable. Albertans diverted 3,648 tonnes or 54 per cent of TELUS directories produced in 2001 from provincial landfills the equivalent of about 182 semi-trailer truckloads of directories.

In addition to the donations, TAS pays registered non-profit groups and schools for collecting old directories and delivering them to a participating recycler.

The TELUS directory recycling program encourages environmental awareness and provides an important fundraising tool for charitable groups and schools, Johnson added.

In Edmonton, the collection drive runs until March 24, 2001. Residents can drop old directories into the specially marked recycle bins provided by Canadian Waste at the parking lots of all Safeway, Save-On Foods, Superstore, Revy and Revelstoke stores around the city. For other Alberta communities, please refer to the recycling guide at the back of each TELUS directory for the locations of participating recyclers.

Customers can watch for advertisements in community newspapers for more information about how to recycle old directories, they can call the recycling program at 1-800-661-4260 or visit www.alberta.com.
