World Wildlife Fund and Coinstar Partner to “Change” the Planet

BELLEVUE, WA — World Wildlife Fund (WWF), a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting the world’s wildlife and wildlands, together with Coinstar Inc., today announced a new nationwide partnership to safeguard our natural world.

WWF and Coinstar call on Americans to help protect the environment by making donations using Coinstar® machines to support WWF’s global conservation work. Coinstar, a worldwide leader in self-service coin-counting and other electronic services, is now accepting donations on behalf of WWF through a feature available on most of its network of more than 10,000 machines at participating supermarkets. This feature makes it easy to give a direct contribution to WWF. After designating WWF as their beneficiary, individuals can simply pour their loose change into the machine, which automatically counts the coins and prints a tax-deductible receipt for the amount of the donation.

WWF has invested in more than 13,000 projects in 157 countries and directs its conservation efforts toward three global goals: saving endangered species, protecting endangered spaces and addressing global threats. From working to save the giant panda, tiger, and rhino to helping establish and manage parks and reserves worldwide, WWF has been a conservation leader for more than 40 years. By donating just a handful of spare change to WWF, people across the country can make a world of difference.

“Our wildlife and wildlands need the support of all Americans to help conserve our natural world for future generations,” said Dave Cole, chief executive officer of Coinstar Inc. “We’re very pleased to partner with World Wildlife Fund to help expand its means for collecting donations. We estimate that there is approximately $10.5 billion in change sitting idle in American households, and each home has on average $99 of loose change. If everyone donated just a handful of change to WWF, it could yield a substantial donation for this respected organization.”

Donations made through Coinstar will support WWF’s Pennies for the Planet program, designed to educate children about biodiversity—the incredible abundance and variety of life on Earth. Each year, the program focuses on three ecoregions in need of special attention. This year, pennies collected will aid the Atlantic Forest of South America, the Everglades and South Florida, and the Miombo Woodlands of southern Africa.

According to Ethan Taylor, Pennies for the Planet coordinator, “WWF is thrilled to be a part of this exciting new partnership with Coinstar. We encourage kids and adults alike to get involved with the Pennies for the Planet program and donate their loose change at a participating Coinstar machine.”
