A Call for Contributions on 'Corporate Citizenship in Africa'

Published 02-20-04

Submitted by Greenleaf Publishing

Greenleaf Publishing invites contributions for a special issue of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship on the topic of 'Corporate Citizenship in Africa: Progress Looking Back; Prospects Looking Forward', to be edited by Wayne Visser of the International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility at Nottingham University Business School, UK, Charlotte Middleton of the National Business Initiative (Regional Partner of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development), South Africa, and Malcolm McIntosh,
independent commentator, educator and writer.

Rationale

Over the past ten years, there have been immense changes sweeping the continent of Africa. While many of its people continue to be afflicted by war, poverty, disease and dictatorships, there have been considerable positive developments as well: democracy has been spreading, many economies have been growing at unprecedented rates and basic services have been extended to many of the continent's poorest populations. The effects of globalisation are also widely in evidence, with the fate of many businesses, including some of the world's largest multinationals, now inextricably linked with the fate of Africa.

Coverage

Contributors to the special edition of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship are also invited to submit their contribution for consideration as a paper for the 'CSR in Africa' stream of the Inter-Disciplinary CSR Research Conference being hosted by of the International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (ICCSR) at Nottingham University Business School on 22-23 October 2004.

Papers for the special edition of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship and the Inter-Disciplinary CSR Research Conference will be subject to separate refereeing processes. Therefore, papers for the special edition of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship should follow editorial guidelines, which can be obtained from Greenleaf Publishing (see below), while submissions to the Inter-Disciplinary CSR Research Conference should follow the guidelines on the ICCSR website (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/business/ICCSR/conference/).

It is anticipated that papers will cover a spectrum of topics. Companies operating in Africa face many complex social, ethical and environmental challenges, opportunities and dilemmas. These are shaped by economic factors(e.g. poverty, debt, industrialisation, globalisation), political factors(e.g. level of democracy, corruption, legislation, institutional capacity), social factors (e.g. cultural context, urbanisation, ethnicity, access to basic services, public health, HIV/AIDS) and ecological factors (e.g. drought, desertification, deforestation, resource scarcity, pollution).

This special issue aims to present research that furthers our understanding of these contextual dynamics in terms of their impact on the relationship between business, society and the environment, as well as the nature and extent of companies' response to the CSR/sustainability agenda in Africa. It is envisaged that papers will fall into two broad themes: (1) those dealing with one or more aspects of stakeholder engagement and accountability; and (2) those focused on the policies and practices that companies have adopted to institutionalise their CSR/sustainability management.

Projected audience

The special issue of the journal will aim to aid managers, students, researchers, government representatives and consultants in understanding the progress and prospects of corporate citizenship in Africa. The publication is expected to incorporate a mixture of case studies, empirical and applied theoretical work.

Contributions

Academics submitting material should clearly state how the theory and concepts developed in their work influences managerial practice. Given the intended practical nature of this publication, we encourage contributions from practitioners in business, NGOs and government, as well as academics.

Theoretical papers should be between 4,000 and 6,000 words and case studies between 2,500 and 4,000 words in length. In addition, short pieces for the 'Turning Points' section are encouraged, particularly coming out of actual corporate/government/NGO practice/thinking and aimed specifically at a non-academic audience. The paper submissions should follow editorial
guidelines, which can be obtained from Greenleaf Publishing (see below).

Schedule

The submission deadline for initial expressions of interest in the form of abstracts of approximately 300 words is 30 April 2004. Abstracts should ideally be sent as email attachments to the Guest Editors for the review process (see 'Contact details' at the end of this Call).

A selection process will then be put into motion. Contributors whose abstracts are felt appropriate for the special issue will then be asked to submit full papers by 30 July 2004. Based on the referees' reports, contributors may be informed of the acceptance of their contributions or be invited to submit final revised papers by 30 November 2004. It is intended that the special issue of The Journal of Corporate Citizenship will be published in May 2005.
