NEW YORK, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) announced today a national relationship with Be The Change, Inc., the public policy and advocacy nonprofit that helped found and lead the ServiceNation campaign. The collaboration is aimed at inspiring a new era of voluntary citizen service. It extends PwC's larger commitment to the community by significantly increasing volunteer opportunities through actively engaging corporate America in service campaigns and promoting a culture of volunteerism, youth education and leadership development in the workplace.

In a related development, PwC also announced a significant expansion of its employee community service program. The firm's national "Month of Community Service" initiative, which focuses on developing future leaders through youth education, is expanding to a "Summer of Community Service," allowing its 31,000 U.S. partners and staff more time and resources to give back to communities nationwide through firm-sponsored volunteerism. Additionally, the firm will continue to provide 10 hours of paid time off for staff to engage in discretionary volunteer opportunities.

The announcements follow President Barack Obama's April 21 signing of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. The bipartisan Serve America Act was co-authored by Senators Ted Kennedy (D-Mass) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), and the details were unveiled by Senator Hatch and Caroline Kennedy at the ServiceNation Summit on September 12, 2008.

"Service instills a commitment to community that can have a profound impact on future leaders," said Shannon Schuyler, U.S. managing director of corporate responsibility for PwC. "We are proud to work with Be the Change to advance volunteerism and service, specifically to expand youth education and leadership development opportunities throughout the United States."

"PricewaterhouseCoopers has long been a corporate leader in service, and has been an invaluable ServiceNation supporter since the campaign was launched at the ServiceNation Summit last September," said Alan Khazei, CEO of Be The Change, Inc. "Inspiring America to become a true nation of service requires support from all sectors of our society and we are grateful for PricewaterhouseCoopers' vision and commitment."

PwC will also serve as a Lead Sponsor for ServiceNation's participation in events around the National Conference on Volunteering and Service, one of the country's largest gatherings of organizations in the areas of education and youth development. PwC will participate in the ServiceNation Strategy Session and Forum, which brings together more than 100 cross-sector leaders from business, civic and faith-based organizations, entertainment, and state and municipal government to discuss strategies for engaging all sectors in the service movement.

"Giving time, in addition to giving money, ensures PwC makes a positive and sustainable impact on communities and people in need," said Schuyler. The firm donated 96,000 hours to volunteerism in fiscal year 2008, worth an estimated $19 million. PwC also donated $30 million in fiscal year 2008 to support local, national and international charitable organizations.

ServiceNation (www.servicenation.org) is the first public policy campaign Be the Change, Inc. helped launch. It's aims are to increase voluntary community and national service opportunities, solve critical problems with proven service strategies, and elevate service as a core ideal in American democracy. ServiceNation was launched in New York city September 11-12, 2008 at a major summit on service, which featured a nationally-televised forum with then-presidential candidates John McCain, Barack Obama. Other participants at the summit included Caroline Kennedy, Alma Powell, chair of America's Promise Alliance, Richard Stengel, managing editor of TIME magazine, Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corporation of New York, Bill Novelli, CEO of AARP, and Laysha Ward, president of community relations and the Target Foundation.
