Capital One, Powergen, Rolls-Royce, Siemens and Toyota have all been praised for their excellent work in the community, and will be sharing their best practice during a showcase event on 12 October, sponsored by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. These companies have each developed a campaign or project that helps to improve the community and provide a better life for everyone.

Capital One worked with Nottinghamshire Police to develop a free of charge computer system called 'Case Administration and Tracking System' (CATS), to help the Police Forces to track child abuse cases. Before CATS there was no computerised system for such cases.

Powergen's 'We Test, You Rest' campaign works with Age Concern to test and replace faulty electric blankets for the elderly, free of charge. It has replaced 10,000 blankets so far.

Siemens and Rolls-Royce has each developed 'Education Programmes' that benefit employees, schools, colleges and the local community.

Toyota has achieved the near impossible - It is sending zero waste to landfill and it has done this through responsible environmental management.

Each company has won a Big Tick award in Business in the Community's Awards for Excellence 2004. These are the most prestigious UK awards recognising responsible business practice and the Big Tick is the highest level awarded to winning companies.

Jeff Rooker, Minister for Regeneration in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, encouraged business leaders to sign up for the event:

"Businesses are vital partners in the Government's drive to create sustainable communities, in which everyone has a stake. It's very important to give business the encouragement and confidence not only to move into disadvantaged areas, but to remain there and to become part of the community.

"I am delighted that so many Business in the Community award-winners are willing to act as exemplars in their region, to spread the word through these best-practice events that community involvement is well worth the effort, even in the most disadvantaged areas."

'Best Practice Showcase' takes place on 12 October 2004, 08:30 to 13:30 at Portland College, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
