LONDON - Stephen Timms MP, Minister for Energy and E-commerce, announced the *‘Examples of Excellence’ at Business in the Community’s annual ‘Awards for Excellence’ Gala Dinner on Thursday 10 July at the London Hilton Metropole Hotel. This coveted title is awarded to companies that have demonstrated not only that they are delivering significant positive impacts on society, but also that they can inspire other companies to improve their performance.

Business and Construction Services company Carillion plc won the Impact on Society Award and was named as Business in the Community’s Large Company of the Year 2003. Making the award to Carillion the judges commented:

“Carillion can demonstrate recognition of the importance of managing impact on society; and uses first class planning and monitoring techniques to take executive management, the workforce as a whole and supply chain partners on the journey of improvement.”

This year, for the first time, the Impact on Society Award was also made to a small company with Adnams, the Suffolk based brewers, being named as business in the Community’s first Small Company of the Year. Happy Computers, a computer training company based in London, was Highly Commended.

Making the award to Adnams the judges commented:

“A shining example of a successful business further improving performance by embedding and sustaining attention to community, workplace and environment concerns both in strategic plans and day to day operations.”

Announcing the Awards, Stephen Timms said: "Businesses do not operate in a vacuum, they depend on the support of their employees and the local community for their continued success.

"Corporate Social Responsibility brings very real advantages to business by benefiting all stakeholders which in turn has a direct impact on business performance and public perception. The Examples of Excellence represented here are proof of that.

"I want CSR to be a mainstream leadership concern for more and more firms. 77% of the FTSE 100 are now signed up to Business in the Community. I want businesses of all sizes and sectors to take advantage of CSR. A key challenge is ensuring companies have the right people with the right skills and knowledge to achieve that.”

Standard Chartered Bank was presented with the International Award for its Partnership for Africa initiative. Sponsored by BUPA Community Connections its objective is to support programmes and projects in local communities across 13 African countries with a focus on youth, health and education and to ensure that implemented programmes produce a direct and long-term benefit to the community.

This year, the regionalisation of the Community Impact Awards has led to a scaling up of responsible practice which businesses place ever higher on their agendas. We now have both large and small companies across the UK displaying vitality, innovation and commitment to improve the communities in which they work.
