NEW YORK, NY – Recognizing the changing needs of today’s business arena and responding to the increasingly vital role public relations plays in enhancing an organization’s reputation through promoting socially responsible practices, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) has launched its newest Professional Interest Section, Strategic Social Responsibility.

“This new Section originated from a grassroots effort within PRSA,” said Scot Marken, president, Coalescence and the coordinator of efforts to launch the new Section. “The formal launch of a Section dedicated to socially responsible business practices demonstrates the professional and personal importance public relations practitioners are placing on respecting ethical values, people, communities and the physical and social environment.”

The Section was created to bring together members from the corporate, nonprofit and government sectors practicing in the areas of philanthropy, business ethics, corporate governance, human rights and work-life issues. For members of PRSA not professionally practicing in this area, this new Section will offer educational and development opportunities.

Section member benefits will include an online directory of PRSA members currently working in this area, a listserv for information exchange and sharing of best practices, workshops and national teleseminars, a virtual library of strategic social responsibility publications and organizations, and the availability of case studies and best practices.

PRSA currently offers 16 Professional Interest Sections that serve as niche networking forums that are precisely relevant to professionals who work in one industry. They are designed to contribute to members’ expertise and resources to increase professional effectiveness. More than 6,000 Section members design and participate in programs, seminars and conferences with speakers and topics customized to focus on issues, trends and research in specialized practice areas.

Those interested in joining a Section must be a PRSA member. Full Section dues will be charged for PRSA members joining a Professional Interest Section within the first six months of their PRSA national membership. Members joining a Section after the first six months of their national membership will be charged half of the annual Section dues.

The Public Relations Society of America, headquartered in New York City, is the world’s largest professional organization for public relations practitioners, with nearly 20,000 members organized into 116 Chapters nationwide. Members include public relations executives who work for corporations, agencies and counseling firms, government, associations, professional services firms and educational, health care and other nonprofit organizations.
