At the 2003 National Environmental Performance Track Members Event in Washington, D.C., Whitman announced the release of the "Performance Track Progress Report." The first of a continuing series of EPA reports highlights the measurable outcomes the Performance Track members accomplished with their environmental improvements, including saving enough energy to power more than 10,000 households for a year, cutting hazardous waste by 700 tons and reducing solid waste by 149,000 tons, which exceeded a three-year goal in the first year.
Whitman also presented seven members with the first Performance Track Outreach awards. These awards recognize organizations for outstanding public education efforts. Additionally these members motivated other facilities to join the EPA Performance Track program. Award recipients include: Baxter Healthcare Corporation of Puerto Rico-Aibonito; Ideal Jacobs Corporation; Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics and Surveillance Systems, Manassas, VA; Madison Chemical Company, Inc.; Motorola-IL02; Norco Cleaners, Inc.; and Nucor Steel Auburn, Inc.
"Performance Track members achieve superior environmental performance that is valuable not only to a company's good name and reputation, but also to the nation's success in making our air cleaner, our water purer, and our land better protected for future generations," said Administrator Christie Whitman.
An environmental best practices online database also was unveiled by Whitman. The EPA, in partnership with Greenbiz.com, a leading business and environment Web site, created the searchable database, which will promote Performance Track members' commitments and actions. Access to tools like the online database is one way EPA encourages companies to participate in Performance Track. Other program benefits include EPA recognition, networking opportunities, and administrative and regulatory incentives.
"Performance Track members have distinguished themselves as environmental leaders, and deserve EPA's continued support, rewards and recognition for their efforts," said Jessica Furey, Assistant Administrator of EPA Office of Policy, Economics, and Innovation.
Whitman also announced that EPA signed a new memorandum of agreement with Tennessee. Similar agreements previously were signed with Texas, Virginia, Massachusetts and Colorado. These states currently offer programs similar to Performance Track, making it possible for members to gain benefits from both the federal and state programs.
The National Environmental Performance Track, launched in June 2000, recognizes and rewards members for their commitment to sound environmental management, continuous environmental improvement, local community involvement and a strong record of compliance. Member facilities represent small and large companies from the manufacturing, chemical, and automotive industries, among others.
