Presidio World College Joins Chicago Climate Exchange

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Global warming is a threat that concerns everyone. Joining an impressive list of businesses and universities committed to serving the environment and slowing the warming trend, Presidio World College, offering an MBA program in Sustainable Management, announced its commitment to become an Associate Member of the Chicago Climate Exchange (CCX), a multi-sector and multi-national market for reducing and trading greenhouse gas emissions. As the first California college to join the CCX, Presidio World College pledged to fully offset greenhouse gas emissions from its electricity use, travel and fuel consumption.

"This is an exciting step for Presidio World College as we continue our journey to educate and provide leadership toward integrating social and environmental values in businesses worldwide," said Steven Swig, President of San Francisco-based Presidio World College. "We expect our membership in the CCX will provide rich and unique opportunities for students to get first-hand experience with practices of sustainable management."

Since 2003, Presidio World College has provided a collaborative learning community to train and educate tomorrow's business leaders. Through an innovative curriculum, Presidio integrates social, ethical and environmental values and responsibility into every course. The mission of the MBA program is to equip students with the solid business skills and leadership capacities they need in order to inspire positive change in organizations and drive bottom-line growth.
In addition to being an educational opportunity for the College's MBA students, the membership with CCX allows Presidio the opportunity to participate in the first market for reducing and trading greenhouse gas emissions. Buying and selling of carbon credits among members is done online through a secure Internet-accessible marketplace, which is updated daily at the close of trading and recorded in the CCX account registry.

If CCX members exceed their commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with climate change and global warming, they may sell those excess emission allowances on the Exchange. Members who do not meet the reduction goal must buy allowances on the Exchange to come into compliance. Emission reductions achieved through the Chicago Climate Exchange are done so in a first-of-its-kind, legally binding greenhouse gas emissions trading mechanism in the U.S.

CCX members reflect a cross-section of major public and private sector North American entities, including Ford Motor, International Paper, IBM, American Electric Power, Manitoba Hydro, Amtrak, the City of Chicago and Oklahoma University, as well as non-industrial environmental innovators such as World Resources Institute, Pax World and the Rocky Mountain Institute. And now, the list includes Presidio World College.

"CCX is pleased to welcome Presidio World College as its newest Associate Member," said Dr. Richard L. Sandor, chair and CEO of the Chicago Climate Exchange. "Presidio World College's decision to mitigate its impact on climate change by participating in CCX's market-based program highlights the school's innovative spirit."

Dr. Sandor recently discussed the innovative topic of market-based responses to the challenge of global warming at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco last Wednesday, April 20.
