As one of the world's largest producers of alcoholic beverages, Allied Domecq is acutely aware of its responsibilities to the communities in which it operates.

Our commitment to social responsibility has always been an inherent part of our corporate mandate and we are clear in our belief that everything we do should respect the basic rules of fair competition and good business practice and reflect our commitment to society as a whole. We therefore also require that our advertising and marketing carries the message that consumers should drink our products responsibly.

However, we are well aware that it is all too easy for companies to talk about what they believe in without taking the actions which demonstrate those beliefs.

That's why we decided, two years ago, that our marketing output should be subject to pre-vetting by well-informed external stakeholders through our Marketing Review Board whose work is outlined in this year's Social Report.

By taking a leadership position in the drinks industry, by including external opinion leaders in our marketing planning and approval processes, we believe we are making a valuable contribution to reducing the abuse of alcohol and promoting beneficial patterns of consumption.

There is no doubt that selling alcoholic beverages is a challenging, socially sensitive and demanding business. The issues are complex, wide ranging and long-term and that's something we hope is reflected in the Social Report.
