Teaching Business Ethics:Business Ethics in the Curriculum

LONDON - The European Business Ethics Network-UK (EBEN-UK) in conjunction with the Institute of Business Ethics (IBE) is organising a one day conference on Teaching Business Ethics. This is the third in a series of conferences that have been organised by EBEN and supported by IBE and which have attracted academics from across Europe and further afield.

This conference is aimed at those who teach business ethics as well as those who influence and design the business curriculum – Deans, Directors of post-graduate and under-graduate programmes and course leaders.

The main aim of this conference is to discuss broad curriculum issues concerning business ethics, although papers considering issues within curricula – case studies, class exercises, pedagogic innovations etc., are also welcome.

In the UK, organisations that have an influence on the business curriculum - Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), Association of Business Schools (ABS), Association of MBAs (AMBA) and the Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN) - all recognise the importance of including social, environmental and ethical issues. But this raises a number of practical questions:

  • Where? Where, in an already full curriculum, can these issues be incorporated? At undergraduate level should this be first, second or third year, or a combination?

  • How? Should the material be integrated with other areas (marketing, accounting, strategy, HRM) or taught separately or in combination?

  • Aims What aims should underpin curriculum design? What learning outcomes are appropriate?

  • Content What should be covered? Is there a “core” which “should” be taught?

    Call for papers
Papers that provide a critical and reflective approach to such curriculum issues are, therefore, particularly welcome. Papers from outside the UK are invited in order to inform the UK debate. Representatives of QAA,ABS,AMBA and LTSN have been invited to take part in a plenary panel session towards the end of the day.

Paper outlines of about 1000 words should be submitted to Professor Geoff Moore – geoff.moore@unn.ac.uk - by 14 July 2003. Acceptance will be notified by 15 September 2003. Outlines of accepted papers will be provided to all delegates Full papers, for consideration in a special issue of Teaching Business Ethics, should be submitted by 15 December 2003.

    To Register
The conference will be held on 6th November 2003, 9.30 - 16.00 at IBE, 24 Greencoat Place, London, SW1P 1BE and will cost £50 for all delegates (including presenters). A light lunch will be provided. Places are limited.
