Governance Conference This Week Examines The Future Of Boards

CHICAGO -- The world's only complete and conceptually coherent operating system for boards will be the focus of a major international conference being held June 10-12, 2004 in Chicago.

Two hundred delegates from around North America and overseas will gather to hear stimulating speakers and enhance their own governance capabilities at The Future of Boards: Realizing the Promise of Owner-Accountability.

Presented by the International Policy Governance Association, the conference features a keynote banquet address by Dr. John Carver, world renowned governance expert and designer of the Policy Governance® system, a special address by Miriam Carver at the conference's opening reception, and a luncheon address by Jeremy Booker, Vice-President, Corporate Governance, BP (British Petroleum).

The conference also features a plenary panel with expert speakers from the corporate, non-profit and public sectors -- Ed Maier, Olan Hendrix, and J. Patrick Boyer -- who will answer the question, "What are the forces you see impacting boards today, and how are boards likely to change, if at all?" Dr. Richard M. Biery will speak on "What do ethics have to do with governance?"

The program includes a variety of interactive workshops, including the practical mechanics of Policy Governance®, recent trends in its use and spread, the relationship between ethics and governance, and even a mock trial where Policy Governance® principles will be tested in a court-like setting.

Unlike many other corporate governance conferences, The Future of Boards will not offer a smorgasbord of "best practices" from which participants may choose, but rather a fully integrated, logical, holistic system based on fundamental governance principles.

Designed by Atlanta-based governance expert, Dr. John Carver, the Policy Governance® system has been widely used by non-profit organizations around the world and is receiving significant attention in the business sector, where, in the wake of the Enron, WorldCom, and other corporate governance failures, it is needed now more than ever.

The system provides a disciplined process that enables boards to be assured that their values are articulated, delegated and executed. Directors sense that a high-integrity governance process better enables them to assure implementation of their values.

"Good board governance is good people using good process," says Dr. Carver. "Either alone will not produce excellence in governance. Success is the fulfillment of purpose. For boards, success is that owners have an informed and effective governor over their organization."

Miriam Carver, who will open the conference with an address about the transformational effect of Policy Governance® and its spread, says one of the most appealing features of the model is that it identifies numerous problems with traditional governance and provides common sense "fixes."

"Even better is that the fixes and the various principles of the model hang together as a whole, an integrated system," she says.

"Policy Governance takes the job of the board seriously. It tells boards not to be content with figurehead status or ceremonial function. It defines leadership at the board level in an achievable way and it forces us to really examine and understand the meaning of accountability."
