Toyota to participate in major demonstration of hydrogen in transportation

As part of a public/private partnership, Toyota will participate in an ambitious five-year project to demonstrate and validate advancements in hydrogen-based transportation infrastructure. The program will encompass up to 24 fueling stations in California, some of which are existing facilities, and others that will be constructed within the framework of the project. The stations will feature a range of hydrogen production and fueling approaches, including the use of renewable energy and the production of hydrogen from natural gas. Toyota, Honda and Nissan plan to assign up to a total of 65 fuel cell vehicles to the project, funded in part by The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Led by Air Products, a leading producer of hydrogen, the program will include the participation of Toyota, Honda, Nissan, BMW, ConocoPhillips, the National Fuel Cell Research Center of the University of California, Irvine, and California's South Coast Air Quality Management District.

Toyota recognized for environmental accomplishments

  • The Electrical Inverter Air Conditioner Team, comprised of Toyota Motor Corporation, Toyota Industries Corporation and DENSO Corporation, has received the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2004 Climate Protection Award. The team developed an electrical inverter air conditioning system that provides cooling for the 2004 Toyota Prius during idle stop.
  • Portland, Oregon's Business Recycling Awards Group honored Toyota's Parts Distribution Center with this year's BRAG award for preventing waste, buying recycled products, and recycling.
  • Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky earned a 2004 Earth Day Award from the Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission for reduction in landfill waste and emissions, energy conservation, and plant-wide environmental education.
  • Toyota companies in Canada were honored in Vancouver at The Globe Foundation's environmental conference with the 2004 Corporate Competitiveness Award for environmental leadership and "economic competitiveness through a commitment to environmental excellence."
  • Toyota Logistics Services of Fremont is the first automotive distribution company in the San Francisco Bay Area to be certified as a Bay Area Green Business. It was recognized as an environmentally aware facility meeting high performance standards in energy, water, and materials conservation.
Toyota supports Clean Cities and Tour de Sol; provides Prius cars for Yellowstone

Toyota sponsored the ten-year celebration of the DOE's Clean Cities program, a nationwide organization of regional governments and others that is working to make cleaner transportation a reality. In collaboration with Clean Cities and the National Parks Department's Greening of National Parks program, Toyota will provide four Prius hybrid cars for use by Yellowstone rangers in 2004. This follows Toyota's supplying vehicles this year for Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area, where they are used for educational programs.

Toyota also supported the fifteenth annual Tour De Sol, a four-day environmental vehicle road rally and public outreach event that ran in New Jersey and New York in May. Tour de Sol is produced by the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association, an organization dedicated to promoting the understanding, development, and adoption of energy conservation and non-polluting, renewable energy technologies.

Earth Day becomes Environmental Month in Indiana

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana has expanded Earth Day observations into Environmental Month, with community involvement activities encompassing outreach, philanthropy and awareness awards. Programs include Earth Aware Camp, which educates 450 third-graders per year about recycling and conservation; the Butterfly Retreat, visited by more than 20,000 people annually; environmental displays; a highway clean-up; and rewards for environmental activities.
