tel(x) Calls on all Telecom Companies to Donate to the Tsunami Relief Efforts

ATLANTA & NEW YORK - tel(x) announces today it has established the Telecom Industry Tsunami Relief Fund and is calling on all telecommunications companies to participate. The fund was established to provide the industry with a coordinated method of contributing to the efforts of Direct Relief International, a non-profit organization providing medical aid and supplies to those devastated in the recent earthquake and resulting tsunamis in Southeast Asia. Well over 80,000 people have lost their lives; tens of thousands more are still missing. Right now, government and aid workers are racing the clock to provide necessary medical supplies to the survivors before disease and starvation further devastate the area.

Direct Relief International (www.directrelief.org) is delivering two initial emergency shipments to the tsunami victims in Southeast Asia. U.S. emergency room physicians are hand-delivering the first shipment, which includes first aid and surgical supplies, critical pharmaceuticals and diagnostic equipment. The physicians will then be deployed to Sri Lankan hospitals in the affected coastal region. The second shipment includes antibiotics, bandages, surgical instruments, blankets and other medical supplies, and will be sent to the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Direct Relief is now organizing a third shipment, expected early next week, and will continue to send medical supplies and relief until the affected communities are no longer in need. Direct Relief International is committed to making every dollar count. Less than 1% of their donations and support is spent on administrative and fundraising expenses.
