Majority of Nonprofits Not Dependent on Corporate Giving According to Kintera Survey

In a survey of decision makers in the nonprofit sector, only 18% said corporate giving made up more than a quarter of their total donations. The survey noted that 36% estimate corporate donations at 10% or less of their total donations, while nearly half (46%) say it represents between 10% and 25% of charitable gifts received. The survey was conducted this month by Internet marketing services provider Kintera Inc., via their Web site at www.kintera.com.

"Most people assume that the implosion of corporate giants like Enron or Kmart would spell disaster for those nonprofits that normally receive donations from these companies or their respective foundations," said Harry Gruber, M.D. and CEO of Kintera. "But, this survey shows that the effects of big businesses collapsing may not be as dire for nonprofits as has been generally accepted. One common assumption is that big business and its deep pockets are responsible for keeping nonprofits' afloat, but the truth is that America's private citizens are what keep philanthropy going in this country," noted Gruber.

For example, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that $1.5 billion was given to September 11th relief efforts, and The Foundation Center reports that approximately $470 million of that amount was given by corporate entities. Using those figures, 68% of September 11th-related giving came from private citizens. Noted Gruber, "There will still be some negative fallout from the Enrons out there, especially on a local level, but these numbers show that Americans are ready more than ever to help those in need."
