DENVER - Volunteers of America today showcased its new Montbello Manor apartments for low-income seniors at a grand opening in the Montbello community in Denver. The 79-unit Montbello Manor property represents Volunteers of America's first effort to provide quality, affordable housing for low-income seniors in the Montbello area. The event coincided with Volunteers of America's 109th anniversary of serving the daily needs of the elderly, children and at-risk youth, the homeless, people with disabilities, and families across the United States.

"Volunteers of America is committed to providing low-income seniors in Colorado with a decent and affordable place to live," Volunteers of America National President and CEO Charles Gould said. "As a faith-based organization, we have a moral obligation to help those individuals and families who are trying to cope with the high cost of housing, coupled with medical care, child care and utilities. We must and will do more to provide the most vulnerable people in our communities with a safe and affordable place to retire or raise their families."

Montbello Manor was designed to provide affordable independent living for low-income seniors, and is located in the Montbello area of Denver near the old Stapleton Airport site. Currently, Volunteers of America provides affordable housing for over 1,000 people in Colorado. Nationally, Volunteers of America owns and operates more than 250 affordable housing communities in 31 states that are home to more than 20,000 people.

The event was held at Montbello Manor at 4355 Carson Street in Denver. Speakers included Lucia Guzman, executive director, Mayor's Office of Human Rights and Community Relations; The Honorable Michael Hancock, Denver City Council, District 11; Marcie LaPorte, director of the HUD Denver Multifamily Hub; Charles Gould, national president and CEO, Volunteers of America; Dianna Kunz, president and CEO, Volunteers of America Colorado Branch; and Eva Thomas, a resident of Montbello Manor.

"We are so excited about the opening of this new housing opportunity in the Montbello area," Kunz said. "This new facility will offer seniors who have lived in this neighborhood for many years with the option of remaining in Montbello and continuing to be active participants in this unique community. For over ten years, Volunteers of America has sponsored a senior dining site and delivered Meals on Wheels to frail homebound residents in Montbello, and we are proud to continue our involvement in this community."
