Athens, Greece - Coca-Cola HBC, provider of non-alcoholic beverages in 28 countries, has just published its Social Responsibility Report (CSR) for 2005.

The summary Report covers 2005 activities in 26 countries in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines 2002. The report demonstrates the progress that has been achieved in embedding corporate responsibility within country operations.

Points to note are progress made in five key areas: Corporate Governance, the Environment, the Workplace, the Marketplace and the Community. The Report indicates how the Company has been implementing its policies on corporate governance and ethical behaviour during the past five years since it was formed, and provides specific information about actions taken in its four focus areas to adhere to third party international standards.

In 2005, Coca-Cola HBC and The Coca-Cola Company signed a partnership agreement with the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) to conduct continuing awareness raising programmes in support of the 81 million people who reside in countries along the River's course.

As part of its commitment on energy, the Company commissioned a tri-generation power plant in Dunaharaszti, Hungary, which has no ozone depleting qualities, very low direct greenhouse impact, and offers optimal energy-efficient refrigeration.

Other highlights for 2005 include:

The Marketplace

  • Increased the choice and variety of beverage offers so that non carbonated beverages represent 28% of the company's sales

  • Achieved target of ISO 9001 certification in 84% of soft drink bottling operations.

  • Actively participated in UNESDA industry initiatives and finalized and implemented a revised code of practice for responsible sales and marketing in schools.

    The Workplace

  • Established Safety Committees in all plants. Achieved OHSAS 18001 certification in 9 plants, and set goals to reach the standard at a further 18 in 2006, and all by the end of 2007.

  • Extended HIV/AIDS programmes for employees and families in Nigeria and implemented safety plans to protect against Malaria.

  • Monitored and ensured effective implementation of Human Rights and Equality policies
    throughout all operations.

    The Environment

  • Improved efficiency in plant water use by 4%, energy 9%, solid waste recycling 5%.

  • Built 3 wastewater treatment units and target full introduction for all plants by 2008.

  • Achieved ISO 14001 certification in 54 of 78 bottling plants, and plan full introduction of all by 2008.

    The Community

  • Launched pilot water conservation scheme for Nigeria.

  • Actively engaged in environmental protection and awareness efforts in all countries.

  • Launched and supported youth, sports and active-lifestyle programmes in all countries.

    As part of its efforts to transparently disclose its actions under the Global Reporting Initiative guidelines, Coca-Cola HBC provides information on the independent verification of standards attained and provides details of studies, including a Company-wide customer satisfaction survey conducted in 2005.
