Dr. Gates will speak on the importance of the Lesbian and Gay population to America's economic success. His talk will discuss the challenges associated with accurately counting the gay and lesbian population and consider the importance of such an enumeration to the nation¹s economy. Using findings from his research documenting the geographic and demographic characteristics of the gay and lesbian population, he explores some of the unique ways in which the gay and lesbian community impacts the quality of life in the workplace and within America¹s cities and neighborhoods.

"The lesbian and gay community plays an important role within the diverse tapestry of the American workplace and within its great cities. Policies that support gay and lesbian equality and encourage diversity provide economic benefits that far outweigh the costs", stated Gates.

In addition to speaking at the luncheon, Dr. Gates will provide a 1 hour plenary session to discuss what the US census can tell us about the Lesbian and Gay Population. The US Census offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the geographic and demographic characteristics of same-sex couples. This workshop considers how same-sex couples are counted in the Census, what has been learned from analyses of these families, and how these findings contribute to our understanding of the larger GLBT population. Specifically, the workshop highlights the geographic distribution of same-sex couples, their demographic and economic characteristics, and how knowledge of these characteristics impact important policy debates affecting the GLBT community.

"Quantifying and qualifying our numbers in the Lesbian and Gay Community is vital to our economic empowerment. Dr. Gates¹ participation at The National GLBT Business Convention is right on the money and will exemplify this year's theme: "Building The Gay Economy Through Recognition, Inspiration and Purpose", stated Echelon Publisher, Michael Lamb.

A Senior Research Fellow at the Williams Project, Dr. Gary J. Gates co-authored The Gay and Lesbian Atlas. His doctoral dissertation included the first significant research study of the demography of the gay and lesbian population using US Census data. His work on that subject has been featured in many national and international media outlets. He has also studied the interplay of regional population diversity and the location and growth of the technology sector. He holds a PhD in Public Policy from the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University along with a Master of Divinity degree from St. Vincent College and a BS in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
