NEW YORK, September 27, 200 -Vestergaard Frandsen (www.vestergaard-frandsen.com), a disease control textile company, will showcase its breakthrough product, Lifestraw at WIRED's NextFest from September 29-October 1, 2006. Vestergaard Frandsen has spent over a decade researching water filtration in partnership with the Carter Center, specifically on the eradication of the guinea worm. Lifestraw has the potential to reduce overall child mortality and save millions of people affected by fatal diseases such as typhoid, cholera, dysentery and diarrhoea.
LifeStraw (www.lifestraw.com) is a nine inch long mobile personal water purification tool that transforms surface water to safe drinking water and ultimately thwarts the threat of deadly waterborne diseases. It was developed to provide an accessible, effective solution to the urgent need for safe water intervention. Available for between $3- $5, the 3.5 oz. "straw" which is comprised of seven filters including mesh, active carbon and halogenated resin can filter up to 185 gallons of water, killing 99.99% of all bacteria.
"Safe water interventions have vast potential to transform the lives of millions," explains CEO Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen of Vestergaard Frandsen. "LifeStraw empowers individuals to take charge of their own lives, as well as members of their own family, and improve overall household water consumption."
More than one billion people lack reliable access to safe drinking water. Diseases associated with inadequate water or sanitation kill around five million people annually. The World Health Organization estimates that 80 percent of all illness in the world is due to water-related diseases.
Vestergaard Frandsen has developed and distributed more than 10 million straw filters to-date, in sub Sahara Afrcia for health and intervention programs and is soon to distribute millions more in India, Ethiopia, and Mali through the commercial sector.
Lifestraw was recognized as one of Time Magazine's Best Inventions for 2005.
