HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 5, 2007--The Gulf of Mexico Foundation today announced that Transocean, the world's largest offshore drilling contractor, has joined the organization which promotes conservation of the Gulf of Mexico through education, awareness and research.

"The richness of the Gulf's natural resources and its beauty are more susceptible to damage than people realize," said Paul Kelly, President of the Gulf of Mexico Foundation. "However, the outlook for the Gulf is improving as stakeholders from all industries are joining together in an effort to promote sustainability. We are very fortunate to have Transocean as a partner in our endeavors. We are pleased to welcome Bob Long, Chief Executive officer of Transocean Inc., to our CEO Council."

Quenton Dokken, Executive Director of the Gulf of Mexico Foundation, adds that Mr. Long has designated Dr. Ian Hudson, Corporate Environmental Advisor, to represent Transocean on the Foundation's Board of Directors. "Dr. Hudson's expertise in deepwater ecology will be invaluable as the Foundation addresses issues of sustainability of ecosystem functioning and habitat productivity. If we are going to preserve the Gulf of Mexico as a sustainable resource for future generations it is essential that business and industry take a proactive leadership position. We are looking forward to working with Mr. Long, Dr. Hudson, and Transocean."

As a major stakeholder in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, Transocean operates the largest fleet of deepwater and mid-water offshore drilling rigs in the area and has an ongoing commitment to protecting the environment.

"We are continually seeking to better develop our environmental stewardship, and one of the best ways is to partner with other leading stakeholders such as the Gulf of Mexico Foundation," said Mr. Long. "We look forward to working with everyone involved in the project."

Other Gulf of Mexico Foundation partners include BP, ConocoPhillips, Dominion, Rowan and Shell Oil Company.

In May of 1990, private citizens representing fisheries, business, industry, tourism, agriculture, and environmental conservation came together to form the Gulf of Mexico Foundation, a private non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. The founders set out to provide leadership, energy, and resources aimed at maintaining a sustainable balance in the health and productivity of the Gulf of Mexico, the most economically productive body of water within the territorial seas of the United States.
