SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- NEC Electronics America, Inc. today announced the successful completion of four company-sponsored volunteer events designed to promote employee volunteerism to environmental causes and reinforce the company's commitment to its local communities.

On April 28, employees from the company's manufacturing plant in Roseville (California) participated in an annual community-wide environmental event known as Creek Week. This year the NEC Electronics America crew removed six tires, several large pieces of metal and 15 bags of trash and other rubbish from Pleasant Grove Creek in Roseville, a tributary to the Sacramento River.

On September 25, employees from the company's sales and design center in Portland (Oregon) volunteered at Summerlake Park in Tigard, where they spent the afternoon weeding, dead heading, mulching and spreading bark dust in the park's Rhododendron Garden.

In San Jose (California), employees from the company's headquarters offices in nearby Santa Clara spent the afternoon of October 26 weeding, mulching and planting at Guadalupe River Park and Gardens. In one designated area of the park, employees planted more than 600 daffodils.

And on October 30, employees from NEC Electronics America's sales and design center in Dallas (Texas) planted 10,710 pansies at Jaycee Park in Irving.

In addition to sponsoring yearly volunteer events, NEC Electronics America maintains environmental management systems (EMS) in Santa Clara, Dallas and Roseville that have been certified for conformance to the ISO 14001 standard. In support of these EMS, employees have been taking aggressive steps to reduce waste to landfill, reduce electricity consumption and reduce paper usage while increasing philanthropy and volunteerism to environmental causes and increasing the use of recycled materials.

At the manufacturing plant in Roseville, the company has been focused on increasing recycling activities and reducing chemical usage, greenhouse gas emissions and ozone-depleting gas emissions. The facility also has been a five-time recipient of prestigious WasteWise awards from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and was one of only ten organizations to receive the EPA's Partner of the Year award last year.

WasteWise (http://www.epa.gov/wastewise) is a voluntary EPA program through which organizations can eliminate costly municipal solid waste to benefit both their bottom lines and the environment. This flexible program allows partners to design solid-waste reduction programs tailored to their individual needs

"NEC Electronics America's pledge to corporate social responsibility is a source of pride that is reflected in our business practices and site operations," said Yuichi Kawakami, president and CEO, NEC Electronics America. "We encourage our employees and executives to volunteer in their local communities to support their personal causes and also those of the company, including environmental causes that help beautify the environment and conserve its natural resources."
