Washington, DC "“ January 2, 2009 "“ Strategic Sustainability Consulting (SSC) is pleased to announce the release of its third annual Sustainability Report. In the report, readers will find information on SSC's economic, environmental, and social performance-all based on the Global Reporting Initiative's Sustainability Reporting Guidelines.

"Our annual sustainability report is probably the best way to see what SSC is about as a company," said SSC President Jennifer Woofter. "It's an opportunity for us to share with readers what we've been up to over the last year, and to reflect on whether or not we're practicing what we preach."

The theme of SSC's 2008 report is "Sustained Growth", a reflection of the company's move from start-up mode to a more thoughtful and strategic period of development. Among the key findings of the report:

    - In 2007, SSC set the goal of doing more work (at least 10%) in its local Washington, DC region. The company exceeded this goal in 2008, with approximately 32% of revenue derived from local clients.

    - SSC also set a goal of reducing the number of miles driven by car, and increasing the number of miles traveled using public transit. In 2008, despite more than doubling its workload, the company drove 3% fewer miles, and increased its train (45%) and subway (1,030%) miles.

    - In expanding its labor pool, in 2008 SSC implemented a database that tracks its more than 300 consultant profiles, skills, and expertise. The company also introduced a certification system to train and certify Green Auditors in SSC's methodology.

    - Although the company's absolute carbon footprint increased by 28% over the previous year, business grew by 87% - which means that SSC is becoming more carbon-efficient as it grows. The company has set a goal of reducing its absolute carbon emissions starting in 2009 - primarily through a stabilization of air travel in the coming year.

"While this sustainability report is an important way that we communicate with our stakeholders, it is also a great opportunity for SSC to see its impacts at a glance," said Woofter. "We use the report to evaluate our progress and plan for the coming years. As we tell our clients, a sustainability report isn't just a look backwards; it's a tool for strategic planning into the future."
