Denver and MONTREAL, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Molson Coors Brewing Company (NYSE: TAP; TSX) received the highest ranking among brewers and alcohol companies, the second highest ranking in the beverage industry category, and ranked 12th overall, in a report released by the Ceres investor coalition titled, "Corporate Governance and Climate Change, Consumer and Technology Companies," which focuses on climate change governance practices at 63 of the world's largest retail, beverage, pharmaceutical, technology, apparel and other consumer-facing companies (http://www.ceres.org).

"We're proud of the rating we received from Ceres, which defines our continued focus on environmental stewardship and the commitment our management and board has made towards responsibility," said Bart Alexander, vice president, global alcohol policy and corporate responsibility for Molson Coors. "The recognition we've received helps to reaffirm our efforts and our commitment to building brands the right way."

Ceres, a national network of investors, environmental organizations and other public interest groups focused on sustainability challenges, listed Molson Coors as the highest ranked brewer in the categories of Board Oversight and Strategic Planning. Molson Coors was recognized for the leadership and engagement of the company’s audit committee and board of directors in the company's corporate responsibility program. The company was also recognized for its commitment to develop Supplier Guiding Principles, along with a program that recognizes sustainability as part of its current Supplier Excellence Awards program. Additionally, Molson Coors has developed and implemented a successful strategy focused on continued reductions in energy and water usage across all facilities worldwide, with substantial global achievements from 2006 "“ 2007, including:

  • A reduction in energy usage by 5 percent

  • A reduction in water use by 4 percent

  • A reduction in CO(2) emissions by 6 percent

  • A reduction in solid waste generation by 14 percent
Molson Coors was also recognized for its innovative efforts to convert waste beer into ethanol, producing 2.7 million gallons of ethanol for sale in Denver in 2007, a 68 percent increase from 2005. As the first major U.S. brewer to convert its waste beer into ethanol, the company began recycling waste beer - beer lost during packaging or deemed below quality standards - and converting it to fuel-grade ethanol in 1996.

The Ceres report also recognized Molson Coors in the category of Management Execution, underscoring the commitment of Chief Executive Officer Peter Swinburn and his endorsement of the United Nations CEO Water Mandate, which Swinburn announced during a keynote address at the Tremblant Forum on Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability in Mont Tremblant, Quebec in September of 2008. In his address, Swinburn reinforced the importance of corporate responsibility as an integral part of the Molson Coors business.
