First Alert Moves To New Recyclable PET Packaging

AURORA, IL "“ March 11, 2008 "“ First Alert, a leading manufacturer of home safety products, announces it is phasing out the use of PVC plastics in its packaging in favor of the more recyclable PET plastic.(1) The change affects packaging for First Alert's extensive line of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

First Alert(R) smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are packaged in clear plastic "clamshells," a packaging style popular with consumers because it allows them to see products before purchasing. Plastic clamshell packaging is commonly used with software, electronics and a wide variety of other consumer products. First Alert made the decision to switch from clamshells produced with PVC (polyvinyl chloride) to those produced with PET (polyethylene terephthalate) to increase the likelihood that its product packaging will be recycled, rather than being destined for landfills.(2)

"This change is a direct result of First Alert's commitment to environmental sustainability," said Debbie Hanson, director of external affairs for BRK Brands/First Alert. "We are evaluating all aspects of our business to identify opportunities to reduce waste and conserve resources. PET plastics are easily recyclable, much more so than our previous plastic packaging, which was one of the primary reasons we made the change." (1)

PET is a thermoplastic polymer resin commonly used to produce soda and water bottles. It has been assigned a recycling indentification code of "1", indicating it is the most recyclable plastic resin available.(3) Hanson added that First Alert has also decreased the overall size of its smoke and CO alarm packaging in an effort to reduce the amount of resources used to package the company’s popular alarm products.

Changes Designed With Consumers In Mind

According to recent survey of 22,000 U.S. consumers, approximately 50 percent consider sustainability when selecting products.(4) Other changes to First Alert smoke and carbon monoxide alarm packaging will make it easier for consumers to quickly identify the type of alarm they are looking for and specific features offered with different models.

Smoke alarms are now packaged in a predominantly red color scheme. Carbon monoxide alarms can be identified by their blue packaging and combination alarms come in purple packaging. Large, identifiable icons on the front of alarm packaging denote special features and make it easy for consumers to select models that meet their specific needs.

The new packaging design also allows consumers to quickly recognize that batteries are included with the alarms and the battery compartment is easily accessible from the front of the alarm, making it much more convenient to change or replace batteries. The redesigned plastic clamshells also feature an "easy-open" tear strip, which eliminates the need for a scissors or other sharp object to open the packaging.

"Ultimately, we believe these changes to our packaging provide a number of benefits, both environmental and practical, that are very meaningful to today's consumers," said Hanson. "We'll continue to evaluate and adapt new technologies and resources that support long-term environmental sustainability."
