Driving Value: Sustainability in a Carbon Conscious World

SAN FRANCISCO, CA. - November 13, 2008 - Sustainability is about more than just reputation preventing loss, it's a core business issue at the heart of economic growth, social responsibility and environmental stewardship that helps companies create value and compete in an increasingly carbon conscious world, according to Roger Ballentine, Green Strategies, Inc. president, speaking at the 2008 IHS environment users conference.

Ballentine, former Chairman of the White House Climate Change Task Force and Deputy Assistant to the President for Environmental Initiatives, discussed the role of corporate sustainability in today's business world in front of a packed room of IHS customers who had gathered to share ideas, provide feedback and gain new insight into various environmental industry issues and implementation strategies.

"The two largest drivers of corporate sustainability, energy and climate change, will reshape the world economy in the coming decades," Ballentine said. "The long-term fundamentals of energy and climate change remain unchanged. We face unprecedented upward demand on energy as well as regulatory and climatic changes that will have great economic impacts. Anticipating the market impact is important for business decisions. That's where sustainability comes in."

Ballentine describes the evolution of corporate sustainability to meet changing business needs and regulatory requirements as Sustainability 2.0:

  • Reducing inefficiencies and waste AND increasing profits;
  • Reducing negative impact on communities AND enhancing license to compete; and
  • Encouraging a culture of innovation AND attracting better employees and increasing market cap.
"There will always be change to compliance and regulatory issues," added Ballentine. "What's most important, however, is to ensure that businesses have the information and management tools it needs to innovate, save money and create value."
