MIAMISBURG, Ohio, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- NewPage Corporation today announced the release of its 2007 Sustainable Development Report. The report includes information of the acquired operations of Stora Enso North America and sets the baseline from which the company will measure its future improvements and achievements.

The 2007 Sustainable Development Report highlights the following company achievements:

  • The corporate headquarters for NewPage in Miamisburg, Ohio, achieved a Green Globes verification from the Green Building Initiative's (GBI) environmental assessment and rating system for commercial structures, the first of its kind in Ohio.
  • NewPage was honored as one of "America's Most Admired" in its industry by Fortune magazine.NewPage has multiple fiber certifications which include American Tree Farm System(R) (ATFS), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Forest Stewardship Council(R) (FSC), Master Logger Certification (MLC),Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) schemes and Sustainable Forestry Initiative(R)(SFI).
  • All NewPage mills in the United States have implemented chain-of-custody systems, which are third-party certified to the FSC, SFI and PEFC.Our Port Hawkesbury mill in Nova Scotia, Canada, has
    third-party certified FSC and PEFC chain-of-custody systems in place.
  • NewPage expanded its line of chain-of-custody certified products.
  • Nearly half of the total energy NewPage consumed last year(including purchased electricity and steam) was produced by burning biomass at its facilities.
  • NewPage beneficially reused more than 80 percent of the manufacturing byproducts it generated in applications such as: burning for energy recovery, agricultural soil amendments, mine restoration, landfill and road construction, raw materials for new products, landfill daily cover and landscaping.
  • NewPage increased its capital investments by 83 percent over the past two years, continuously improving its operations of some of the highest quality facilities and paper machines in North America, producing best-of-class products.
  • NewPage increased the investment in its people from $150,000 in 2006 to more than $12 million in 2007 by providing tools such as RapidChange and Lean Six Sigma(R).
  • NewPage contributed more than one million dollars to charitable organizations in its local communities.
