Library Journal Calls Miller-McCune One of Year's 10 Best New Magazines; Utne Reader Nominates Miller-McCune for Science/Tech Coverage in Its Independent Press Awards

May 06 /CSRwire/ - SANTA BARBARA, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 05/06/09 -- Library Journal named Miller-McCune one of its 10 best new magazines of 2008 today, shortly after the magazine was nominated in the science/technology category of the Utne Reader's 20th annual Independent Press Awards. "We are honored to have made such an early impact on readers and reviewers," Miller-McCune Editor John Mecklin said. "It's time for a new way of thinking and dealing with the problems we face in this nation." Miller-McCune provides research and articles that have show real potential for solving current social issues particularly in healthcare, education, social policy and environmental issues.

In its assessment of Miller-McCune, Library Journal said the magazine evinces a "hopeful, forward-looking mood" and tries to "counterbalance the all-too-common spin, punditry, and 'truthiness' in popular media" with nonideological reportage.

Among Library Journal's other top-rated magazine launches of the year were Lapham's Quarterly, edited by longtime Harper's editor Lewis Lapham; BBC Knowledge, edited by Sally Palmer and "designed for a general audience interested in science, history, and nature"; and World Affairs, edited by Lawrence F. Kaplan, "a worthy complement to Foreign Affairs and Foreign Policy." A list of winners can be found at

In the Independent Press Awards, Utne Reader editors nominate magazines that, in their view, represent the best independent journalism in 12 categories. The winners in each category will be announced May 17. "While there are reasons to be anxious about the media's future, the work featured in all of our nominees shows that great storytelling is alive and well," Utne Editor-in-Chief David Schimke said.

Joining Miller-McCune as nominees in the science/technology category are the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, California, IEEE Spectrum, Science News, The Scientist, Stanford and Technology Review. A full list of the Independent Press Award nominees can be found at:
