Hydro-Québec's sustainable development initiatives focus on six main themes:

  • Renewable energies and energy efficiency
  • Environmental protection and quality of life
  • Social commitment
  • High-quality, customer-driven service
  • Human resources development
  • Contribution to the Québec economy

Key achievements in 2008

  • Renewable energy represents 98% of the total electricity generated by Hydro-Québec.
  • Hydro-Québec's capital program, which reached $4.0 billion, reflects its continued involvement in major projects in the Generation and Transmission sectors.
  • Energy efficiency objectives were topped for a fifth consecutive year with 1.1 TWh in savings, bringing the company closer to its 2010 target of 5.8 TWh.
  • Archaeological inventories begun in 2002 on Eastmain-1-A/Sarcelle/Rupert: Digs went on at 45 locations, making this the largest archaeological site in Québec. Remains dating back 4,650 years have been discovered.
  • $100 million was invested in over 100 research projects, including research on emerging renewables such as hydrokinetic and salinity gradient power.
  • 89% of goods and services were purchased in Québec, representing $2.4 billion for the economy.

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and verification

For its Sustainability Report 2008, Hydro-Québec produced a self-declaration corresponding to application level B of the GRI's G3 guidelines. The declaration has been checked by the GRI. Moreover, some of the data have been verified by an external firm and are identified with a symbol.
