The notion that consumer attitudes are shifting in favor of brands that have strong sustainability credentials is not a new phenomenon in the year 2015. However, in spite of a good number of brands having made impressive commitments, their sustainability efforts may not necessarily be delivering the intended value to consumers or positive ROI for the brand.

A decisive change in favour of transparent tax reporting by business, new rules on executive pay and incentivising a shift to long-term investment are encompassed in a draft EU law voted in the European Parliament last week. One of the key advocates of the proposal, European Parliament Rapporteur on Corporate Social Responsibility Richard Howitt MEP, writes here that the EU 'Shareholder Rights Directive' represents a major push for responsible business.

Last year, the European Union (EU) announced its new guidelines on non-financial reporting that will only apply to some large entities with more than 500 employees. This includes listed companies as well as some unlisted companies; such as banks, insurance companies and other companies that are so designated by member states; because of their activities, size or number of employees. There are approximately 6,000 large companies and groups within the EU bloc (EU, 2014). These big organisations are increasingly using a wide array of instruments, tools and channels to communicate their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reports to stakeholders.
